Ernest 'Fritz' Hollings was a prominent American politician who served as a United States Senator from South Carolina from 1966 to 2005. A member of the Democratic Party, he also served as the 106th Governor of South Carolina and as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. Throughout his long career, Hollings was known for his fiscal conservatism, his support for a balanced budget amendment, and his focus on issues like hunger and ocean policy. He was a key figure in the creation of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
