Emanuel Celler was an influential American politician who served as a Democratic U.S. Representative from New York for nearly half a century, from 1923 to 1973. A native of Brooklyn, he became the dean of the House of Representatives and a powerful chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. He was a key figure in the passage of significant civil rights legislation, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Celler also co-sponsored the landmark Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which fundamentally changed American immigration policy.
