David Wilmot

Politician

David Wilmot was an American politician and judge from Pennsylvania who served as a U.S. Congressman and later a U.S. Senator. He is best known for authoring the Wilmot Proviso, a legislative proposal in 1846 that aimed to ban slavery in any new territory acquired from Mexico during the Mexican–American War. Although the proviso was repeatedly blocked in the Senate, it ignited a national debate over slavery that became a major catalyst for the American Civil War. Wilmot was a key figure in the founding of the Republican Party and remained a staunch opponent of the expansion of slavery throughout his career.
