Politician

Charles Sumner was a leading American politician and statesman from Massachusetts during the Civil War and Reconstruction era. As an academic lawyer and a powerful orator, Sumner was the leader of the antislavery forces in Massachusetts. He is perhaps best known for being brutally beaten with a cane on the Senate floor in 1856 by Representative Preston Brooks after delivering a fiery anti-slavery speech. A Radical Republican, he fought tirelessly to destroy the Confederacy, free all the slaves, and ensure equal rights for African Americans.
