“The first step to heaven is to know that we are on the way to hell.”

“I have no hope but in the mercy of God in Christ Jesus.”

“I have a great jealousy on this head: never to speak my own words, but the words of God.”

“My object is to show the whole counsel of God.”

“My endeavour is to bring out of Scripture what is there, and not to thrust in what I think might be there.”

“To be humble, to be holy, is the great thing.”

“A minister's life is his best sermon.”

“The true way to be humbled is not to look at your sins, but to look at God.”

“In a word, I am what I am, through the grace of God.”

“I love the praise of God, but I fear the praise of men.”

“My desire is to have my own will annihilated, and the will of God to be all in all.”

“There are two things I am most thankful for in my life; the first is that God never gives me all I ask for, and the second is that He always gives me all I need.”

“My rule is, never to look into a book to see what I can get to say; but to see what God has said.”
