John Stapylton Habgood was an eminent British Anglican bishop, academic, and life peer. He served as the Bishop of Durham from 1973 to 1983 and then as the Archbishop of York, the second-highest office in the Church of England, from 1983 until his retirement in 1995. Before his ecclesiastical career, Habgood was a distinguished physiologist and served as a fellow at King's College, Cambridge. Known for his intellectual rigour, he was a respected public voice on the complex relationship between science and religion.
