Carl Albert was an influential American lawyer and politician who rose to one of the highest offices in the United States government. Born in McAlester, Oklahoma, he attended the University of Oklahoma and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University before embarking on a career in law. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 30 years, from 1947 to 1977, representing Oklahoma's 3rd congressional district as a Democrat. Albert's political career culminated in his tenure as the 46th Speaker of the House from 1971 to 1977, where he was twice second in the line of presidential succession during the Watergate era.
