Anthony Blunt

Art Historian

Anthony Blunt was a leading British art historian and a professor at the University of London. He served as Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures from 1945 to 1972, gaining international renown for his expertise on French classical art. However, his distinguished career was dramatically overshadowed in 1979 when Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher publicly revealed he had been a member of the Cambridge Five spy ring. Blunt had confessed to being a Soviet agent in 1964 in exchange for immunity from prosecution, but his secret was kept for fifteen years until his public exposure caused a major scandal.
