Alice B. Toklas was an American-born author and a central figure in the Parisian avant-garde of the early 20th century. She is best known as the life partner of the modernist writer Gertrude Stein, with whom she hosted a renowned salon. Toklas herself gained fame with the publication of her 1954 memoir, The Alice B. Toklas Cook Book, which blended recipes with personal reminiscences. Her life and relationship with Stein were famously chronicled in Stein's own book, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas.
