Alf Landon

Politician

Alfred 'Alf' Mossman Landon was an American politician who served as the 26th Governor of Kansas from 1933 to 1937. A prominent member of the Republican Party, he was its nominee for President of the United States in the 1936 election. Landon was overwhelmingly defeated by the incumbent, Franklin D. Roosevelt, carrying only Maine and Vermont in one of the most lopsided elections in U.S. history. Despite this loss, he remained a respected elder statesman within his party and a symbol of moderate Republicanism for decades.
