Alexander Dubček

Politician

Alexander Dubček was a Slovak politician who served as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and led the Prague Spring reforms. He famously attempted to implement "socialism with a human face," a policy of liberalisation that included greater freedom of speech and the press. His reformist period was abruptly ended by the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968, which led to his removal from power. After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, Dubček returned to politics and became chairman of the federal parliament, symbolizing the nation's return to democracy.
