Wilma Rudolph was an American sprinter who became a world-record-holding Olympic champion and international sports icon in track and field. Rudolph overcame childhood polio and scarlet fever to win three gold medals at the 1960 Rome Olympics, making her the first American woman to do so in a single Olympiad. Her incredible story of perseverance and triumph made her a role model for Black and female athletes. After retiring from sports, she worked as a teacher, coach, and community advocate.
