William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States, serving from 1897 until his assassination in 1901. He led the nation to victory in the Spanish-American War and raised protective tariffs to promote American industry. His presidency marked the beginning of the Progressive Era and was a period of rapid economic growth. He was succeeded by his Vice President, Theodore Roosevelt, after being fatally shot by an anarchist.
