Wilhelm Steinitz

Chess Player

Wilhelm Steinitz was an Austrian and later American chess player, and the first official World Chess Champion from 1886 to 1894. He was a hugely influential figure in the development of chess strategy, moving the game from a romantic, attacking style to a more positional and scientific approach. His theories on the accumulation of small advantages and the importance of pawn structure revolutionized the game and are still studied today. Despite his immense contributions and initial success, Steinitz struggled with poverty and mental health issues later in life, dying in New York City.
