“I was a man of the theater. I always have been. I came from the theater. I was never a movie star.”

“I never had a driving ambition to be a star.”

“An actor's life is a bit like a soldier's. You go where you're sent.”

“I'd much rather be a successful actor than a star.”

“I was always a character actor. I've just been playing the lead for 20 years.”

“The only thing I ever really wanted was to be a professional. A professional actor. Not a star. I just wanted to be able to do it and make a living at it.”

“I was never one of those people who had to have a big entourage. I was always very happy to be on my own.”

“I think the best actors are the people who are just themselves. They don't try to be anything else.”

“Hollywood is a place where they'll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul.”
