Thomas Spence

Political Theorist

Thomas Spence was a prominent English radical political theorist and advocate for land reform in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, he developed a political philosophy known as 'Spenceanism,' which called for the abolition of private land ownership and its replacement with a system of parishes owning land in common. He tirelessly promoted his ideas through pamphlets, tokens, and chalking slogans on walls, often facing imprisonment for his radical views. Spence's vision of a society with common land ownership and universal suffrage profoundly influenced later socialist and Chartist movements.
