Thomas Overbury

Poet

Sir Thomas Overbury was an English poet and essayist, best known for his influential poem 'A Wife' which outlined the virtues of an ideal spouse. He became a prominent figure in the Jacobean court as an advisor to his friend, Robert Carr, Viscount Rochester. Overbury's opposition to Carr's proposed marriage to the divorced Frances Howard led to his politically motivated imprisonment in the Tower of London. He died in the Tower after being slowly poisoned, a murder that resulted in one of the most sensational scandals of the era.
