Thomas Holcroft was a prominent English dramatist, writer, and translator, born on December 10, 1745, in London. Initially working various jobs, including as a stableboy and shoemaker, he eventually found success in the literary and theatrical worlds of the late 18th century. He is best known for his sentimental and melodramatic plays, such as "The Road to Ruin," and for his radical political beliefs as a supporter of the French Revolution. Holcroft's memoirs, completed by William Hazlitt, provide a valuable account of his eventful life and the intellectual currents of his time before his death on March 23, 1809.
