Thomas Chatterton

Poet

Thomas Chatterton was an English poet whose precocious talents and tragic death made him a romanticized figure in the late 18th century. He is best known for his "Rowley" poems, which he claimed were the work of a 15th-century monk but were, in fact, his own brilliant forgeries. Despite his literary genius, he struggled with poverty and lack of recognition, which contributed to his growing despair. He died by suicide at the young age of 17, becoming an iconic symbol of unrecognized youthful genius for the Romantic poets who followed.
