Themistocles

Statesman

Themistocles was a prominent Athenian politician and general during the Greco-Persian Wars. He rose to power in the early Athenian democracy and was a leading advocate for increasing the naval power of Athens. His strategic brilliance was instrumental in the decisive Greek victory over the invading Persian fleet at the Battle of Salamis in 480 BC. Despite his vital role in saving Greece, he was later ostracized from Athens and spent his final years in the service of the Persian king.
