Saint Stephen

Christian Martyr

Saint Stephen is revered in Christianity as the first martyr, or protomartyr, and one of the first seven deacons chosen by the Apostles. He was a Hellenistic Jew tasked with distributing aid to widows and the poor within the early Christian community of Jerusalem. After being accused of blasphemy, he delivered a powerful speech to the Sanhedrin, which resulted in his execution by stoning. His final moments, in which he prayed for his executioners, established a foundational example of Christian forgiveness and faith in the face of persecution.
