Rudolf Hilferding

Economist

Rudolf Hilferding was an influential Austrian-born German Marxist economist, politician, and leading theorist for the Social Democratic Party of Germany. He is best known for his seminal 1910 work, Das Finanzkapital (Finance Capital), which analyzed the transformation of competitive capitalism into finance-dominated monopoly capitalism. Hilferding served twice as the German Minister of Finance during the Weimar Republic, attempting to stabilize the nation's economy. His life ended tragically when he was arrested by the Gestapo in Vichy France and subsequently tortured to death in a Paris prison.
