Rose E. Bird

Jurist

Rose E. Bird was an American jurist who served as the 25th Chief Justice of California from 1977 to 1987. Appointed by Governor Jerry Brown, she was the first woman to serve as a justice and as chief justice on the California Supreme Court. Her tenure was marked by controversy over her consistent opposition to the death penalty, where she voted to overturn all 61 capital punishment cases she reviewed. Ultimately, she was removed from office by voters in a historic 1986 retention election, the only chief justice in California's history to be so removed.
