Robert W. Welch Jr.

Activist

Robert W. Welch Jr. was an American businessman, anti-communist activist, and political commentator. He is best known as the founder of the John Birch Society, an influential conservative advocacy group established in 1958. Welch promoted numerous conspiracy theories, most famously alleging that U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower was a communist agent. His fervent opposition to what he saw as communist infiltration in American government and society made him a highly influential and polarizing figure in mid-20th-century politics.
