Robert Toombs

Politician

Robert Toombs was an influential American politician and a leading figure in the secessionist movement in the Southern United States. He served in the Georgia legislature, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the U.S. Senate, where he was known for his powerful oratory and strong pro-slavery views. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Toombs became one of the founders of the Confederacy, serving as its first Secretary of State and later as a brigadier general in the Confederate Army. After the war, he fled abroad to avoid arrest but eventually returned to Georgia, remaining an unrepentant Confederate and a vocal critic of Reconstruction until his death.
