Robert Gould Shaw

Military Officer

Robert Gould Shaw was an American military officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Born into a prominent Boston abolitionist family, he was appointed colonel of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, one of the first all-black regiments to see combat. He and the 54th Massachusetts led a frontal assault on Fort Wagner in Charleston, South Carolina, on July 18, 1863. Shaw was killed on the parapet of the fort, and his heroic leadership became a symbol of sacrifice for the cause of freedom.
