Robert Anderson was a United States Army officer who served during the American Civil War. He is best known for his command of Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina, during the Confederate bombardment that initiated the conflict. Despite being a Kentuckian with pro-slavery views, he remained fiercely loyal to the Union. After his surrender and subsequent promotion, ill health forced his retirement from active service, though he was hailed as a national hero.
