Pliny the Elder

Author

Gaius Plinius Secundus, better known as Pliny the Elder, was a Roman author, naturalist, natural philosopher, and naval and army commander of the early Roman Empire. He is most famous for his encyclopedic work, Naturalis Historia (Natural History), which became a model for later encyclopedias and scholarly works. This extensive text covered a vast range of subjects including astronomy, geography, zoology, botany, and mineralogy, compiling the knowledge of his time. Pliny died in 79 AD while attempting to rescue a friend and his family from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, an event famously documented by his nephew, Pliny the Younger.
