Philo of Alexandria

Philosopher

Philo of Alexandria was a prominent Hellenistic Jewish philosopher who lived in Alexandria, in the Roman province of Egypt. He is best known for his synthesis of Jewish scripture with Greek philosophy, particularly the works of Plato. Using allegorical interpretation, Philo sought to demonstrate that the teachings of the Torah were compatible with the universal truths of Greek philosophical thought. His extensive writings had a significant influence on later Christian theologians, particularly Origen and Clement of Alexandria, shaping the development of biblical exegesis.
