Sir Peter Snell was a celebrated New Zealand middle-distance runner who dominated the sport in the early 1960s. He won three Olympic gold medals, capturing the 800 metres at the 1960 Rome Olympics and winning both the 800 and 1500 metres at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Trained by the legendary Arthur Lydiard, Snell also broke multiple world records during his career, including for the mile and 800 metres. After retiring from athletics, he moved to the United States to pursue a career in sports medicine and exercise physiology, earning a PhD.
