Pasquier Quesnel

Theologian

Pasquier Quesnel was a French Jansenist theologian known for his significant contributions to the religious debates of the 17th and 18th centuries. He joined the French Oratory in 1657 and became a leading figure within the Jansenist movement, which advocated for Augustinian doctrines of original sin and divine grace. His most famous work, "Le Nouveau Testament en français avec des réflexions morales sur chaque verset," was condemned by Pope Clement XI's papal bull Unigenitus in 1713. This condemnation sparked major controversy within the French Catholic Church, leading to Quesnel's exile and cementing his legacy as a central figure in the Jansenist controversy.
