Oswald Theodore Avery Jr. was a Canadian-American physician and pioneering molecular biologist. He is best known for the landmark 1944 experiment with his co-workers Colin MacLeod and Maclyn McCarty that isolated DNA as the material of which genes and chromosomes are made. This discovery, known as the Avery–MacLeod–McCarty experiment, was a crucial step in establishing the field of molecular genetics. Despite the monumental importance of his work, Avery was never awarded the Nobel Prize, an omission frequently cited as a major error by the Nobel committee.
