Mencius

Philosopher

Mencius, also known as Mengzi, was an ancient Chinese Confucian philosopher who is often described as the 'second Sage,' following only Confucius himself. He is most famous for his theory of innate human goodness, arguing that all people are born with the potential for virtue. His teachings were collected in the book Mencius, which became one of the Four Books that formed the core of orthodox Neo-Confucian thought. Through his dialogues with rulers and disciples, Mencius expounded on concepts like righteousness, benevolence, and the Mandate of Heaven, profoundly influencing East Asian thought and culture for centuries.
