Mathias Rust

Aviator

Mathias Rust is a German amateur aviator who gained international notoriety during the Cold War. In 1987, at the age of 18, he flew a rented Cessna 172 from Helsinki, Finland, through Soviet airspace and landed near Red Square in Moscow. His flight was a significant embarrassment to the Soviet air defense system and had wide-reaching effects, leading to the dismissal of many high-ranking military officials. After serving time in a Soviet prison, Rust returned to Germany and has since lived a relatively private life, with his audacious flight remaining a symbol of youthful idealism and a crack in the Iron Curtain.
