Mary Leakey

Paleoanthropologist

Mary Leakey was a renowned British paleoanthropologist who made several of the most significant fossil discoveries of the 20th century. Working for decades at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, she unearthed the first fossilized Proconsul skull and the robust Zinjanthropus skull. Her most celebrated find came in 1978 with the discovery of the Laetoli footprints, which provided irrefutable evidence of early hominin bipedalism. Her meticulous work fundamentally reshaped our understanding of human evolution.
