Martin Robison Delany was a prominent African-American abolitionist, journalist, physician, and writer, often considered one of the earliest proponents of Black nationalism. Born free in Charles Town, Virginia, he became a leading voice against slavery, co-editing the influential newspaper 'The North Star' with Frederick Douglass. Delany later attended Harvard Medical School and served as a major in the United States Army during the Civil War, becoming the highest-ranking African-American field officer of the war. His extensive writings and tireless activism laid a crucial foundation for future civil rights and Black empowerment movements in the United States.
