Martha Dandridge Custis Washington was the wife of George Washington, the first President of the United States. Although the title was not coined until after her death, she is considered to be the first First Lady of the United States. During her life, she was known for her gracious hospitality and for managing the extensive Mount Vernon estate. She set many of the precedents for the role of the president's wife, balancing public duties with her private life.
