Marjory Stoneman Douglas was a pioneering American journalist, author, and environmental activist. She is best known for her tireless advocacy for the preservation of the Florida Everglades, a passion that defined much of her long life. Her seminal 1947 book, The Everglades: River of Grass, completely transformed public perception of the region and was instrumental in the establishment of Everglades National Park. Douglas remained a fierce and outspoken defender of the environment until her death at the age of 108, leaving a lasting legacy in the American conservation movement.
