Margaret Chase Smith was an American politician who served as a U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator from Maine. A member of the Republican Party, she was the first woman to serve in both houses of the United States Congress. She is best remembered for her 1950 speech, the "Declaration of Conscience," in which she criticized McCarthyism. Her long and distinguished career in public service made her one of the most prominent political figures of the 20th century.
