Marcus Terentius Varro

Scholar

Marcus Terentius Varro was a Roman polymath and one of ancient Rome's greatest scholars. He served as a high-ranking officer under Pompey the Great but was later pardoned by Julius Caesar. Varro wrote an estimated 74 Latin works in 620 books, covering an extraordinary range of subjects from grammar to agriculture. Although most of his vast literary output is lost, his influence on later Roman writers and the preservation of Roman culture was immense.
