Louis Bonaparte was a younger brother of Napoleon Bonaparte and was installed by him as the King of Holland in 1806. Despite his brother's intentions, Louis took his duties as king seriously, adopting the Dutch name Lodewijk and striving to be an independent and benevolent ruler for his new country. His pro-Dutch policies often brought him into conflict with Napoleon, who expected Holland to serve French interests above all else. Ultimately, his disagreements with his powerful brother led to his abdication in 1810 and he spent the remainder of his life in exile.
