Lady Jane Grey

Monarch

Lady Jane Grey was an English noblewoman who claimed the throne of England and Ireland for nine days in July 1553. Known as the 'Nine-Day Queen,' her brief reign was a result of political maneuvering by her father-in-law to maintain Protestant rule after the death of King Edward VI. The Privy Council, however, quickly switched its allegiance to the Catholic Mary Tudor, Edward's half-sister and the rightful heir. Jane was subsequently charged with high treason and was executed at the Tower of London at the age of 16 or 17.
