Poet

Jupiter Hammon was a pioneering American writer and the first African American poet to be published in the United States. Born into slavery in Lloyd Harbor, New York, he was afforded the rare opportunity to become literate by his enslavers, the Lloyd family. His first published poem, 'An Evening Thought: Salvation by Christ with Penitential Cries,' appeared in 1761, establishing his literary presence. Throughout his life, Hammon used his writings to explore themes of religion, salvation, and the complex condition of slavery, advocating for gradual emancipation.
