John Hoyer Updike was an acclaimed American novelist, poet, short-story writer, and literary critic. He is best known for his 'Rabbit' series of novels, which chronicle the life of the middle-class everyman Harry 'Rabbit' Angstrom over several decades. Updike's work often explored themes of religion, sex, and American life in the latter half of the 20th century with meticulous and lyrical prose. A two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, he remains one of only four authors to have achieved this feat.
