John Sutter

“I am ruined.”

“The first thing I did was to ask him to lock the door. Then I looked at the stuff and saw that it was gold.”

“It was a rainy afternoon when Mr. Marshall, a man with whom I had a contract for a sawmill, entered my office. He was soaked to the skin and looked wild-eyed.”

“I was everything, and now I am nothing.”

“By this sudden discovery of the gold, all my great plans were destroyed.”

“Had I succeeded, a brilliant future would have been before me.”

“I had the best of stock and sold it for a trifle, because the people were wild and had plenty of gold.”
