John Sutter

Pioneer

John Augustus Sutter was a German-born Swiss pioneer who became a key figure in the history of California. He established Sutter's Fort in the area that would eventually become Sacramento, the state's capital. His life was dramatically altered in 1848 when James W. Marshall discovered gold at his sawmill, sparking the California Gold Rush. Despite the immense wealth generated on his land, Sutter was ultimately ruined financially as thousands of gold-seekers overran his properties and destroyed his businesses.
