John Gibbon was a distinguished career officer in the United States Army, renowned for his service in the American Civil War and the Indian Wars. A graduate of West Point, he commanded the famed 'Iron Brigade' of the Army of the Potomac, earning a reputation for bravery and tactical skill. He played a pivotal role at the Battle of Gettysburg, where he commanded the 2nd Division, II Corps, and was severely wounded while defending Cemetery Ridge against Pickett's Charge. After the Civil War, Gibbon continued his military career in the American West, participating in campaigns against Native American tribes, most notably during the Nez Perce War.
