John Conyers Jr. was an American politician who served as a U.S. Representative for Michigan for more than 50 years, from 1965 until his resignation in 2017. As a member of the Democratic Party, he became the longest-serving African American member of Congress in American history. He was a co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus and a leading voice on civil rights and civil liberties. Conyers chaired the powerful House Judiciary Committee from 2007 to 2011, overseeing matters of immense national importance.
