John Byng

Naval Officer

Admiral John Byng was a British officer of the Royal Navy. He is best known for the loss of Minorca in 1756 at the beginning of the Seven Years' War. His subsequent court-martial found him guilty of failing to 'do his utmost' to prevent the island from falling to the French. He was sentenced to death and executed by firing squad, an event satirized by Voltaire in his novel Candide.
