John Bacon was a prominent English sculptor born in Southwark, London. He was apprenticed to a porcelain manufacturer where he first demonstrated his artistic talent by modelling figures. Bacon became one of the founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768 and was celebrated for his monuments and statues. His most famous works include the monument to William Pitt the Elder in Westminster Abbey and the statue of George III in the courtyard of Somerset House.
