James Earl Carter Jr. served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as the 76th governor of Georgia and as a Georgia state senator. After his presidency, Carter remained active in public life, establishing the Carter Center to promote peace and human rights. For his extensive post-presidential work, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
